Background

Somaliland’s construction industry is growing at a high rate. Like many developing countries, the utilization of the available technical resources and personnel is important in advancing the economy and saving on the meager resources that would otherwise go to experts or training
in other countries. Civil Engineering is a very important profession. It deals with provision of solutions to the majority of problems of society. The profession requires planning, designing and construction of physical infrastructure that enhances and sustains human activity. These include provision of shelter, water treatment, water supply, waste disposal, transportation, and a host of others. The role of a Civil Engineer is to provide these and others as society may need from time to time in a changing world. Undergraduate studies are carried out in three separate shifts, morning shift, afternoon shift and evening shifts on weekdays,

 Justification
The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering started at Gollis University in 2004, starting with 40 students only. The world is changing, new technologies are coming up and generally tastes and trends have changed in the construction industry. Further, graduates need to be prepared for the challenges in the construction industry in which more areas now require a lot of emphasis for effective competition on the job market. Also, after running the programme for 13 years, gaps and areas for improvement have been identified. Graduates of the programme have been in the field since 2007 and areas have been cited by employers and attested by our graduates where improvement is required. The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering has been redesigned to address the above concerns and further enhance infrastructural developments in Somaliland and the neighboring regions in the Horn of Africa in general.

There are two laboratories Soil Laboratory and surveying lab, supporting, teaching activities for undergraduate students and are used for conducting experimental works of the Bsc students on their research activities.

Enrollment grows: The enrollment in Civil engineering has  grown substantially, particularly in the last several years. Know 372 students are sitting in the class

 Vision

The main goal of the Civil Engineering Department is to provide an educational programme which will be highly recognized in national and international levels as well as contributing to the scientific and technological development and welfare of the society as a whole.

Mission

To prepare students for an enhanced quality of life by providing an educational experience that leads to the baccalaureate degree in civil engineering.

To use special capabilities and expertise of the program’s faculty to address regional, national, and local needs in civil engineering, including the areas of geotechnical, structural, and water resource.

To serve the Republic of Somaliland by providing training and education that will benefit the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of facilities essential to civilization.

To educate the students by giving them fundamental of engineering knowledge, design, and practical skills, and provide them the necessary tools to take their place in the modern world.

To increase the quality of life by providing safe and modern living environments by disseminating scientific thought and environmental consciousness, by developing social cooperation and solidarity culture, and by creating conditions for sustainable development.

To lead in increasing the quality of civil engineering to the international levels, in prioritizing research and development activities, in increasing the awareness of standards and codes and in encouraging the dominance of professional ethics.

General Objectives

The general objectives of the programme are to:

  • produce graduate engineers who are well equipped in theoretical and practical skills to manage the engineering services;
  • train people who will be able to advance in higher education, research and development;
  • train personnel who will be job creators either individually or in partnership with others;
  • train personnel who will work in private and government institutions with minimum supervision;
  • train personnel who will conserve, promote and improve the environment and maintain public health and

Specific Objectives

By the end of the programme, learners should be able to:

  • explain the theoretical and practical aspects of Analysis, Design and Construction;
  • plan, design, tender, execute and manage construction projects by working for and with other partners or by self-employment;
  • maintain buildings and other civil engineering infrastructure;
  • independently carry out research and innovation in Science, Engineering and other related fields including the use of ICTs in Civil and Building Engineering;
  • impart the acquired knowledge and skills to other interested persons
